Enos - All to Human

"Collisions" infatti è pregna delle atmosfere di 'The Dark Side of the Moon', con vocalizzi alla "The Great Gig in the Sky" e tanto ancora, però nel suo insieme risulta personale e molto introspettiva. (Michele Montanari)

Lustre - Wonder

#FOR FANS OF: Black/Ambient
Lustre’s particular brand of atmospheric black metal has always struck me on a deep and personal level. Whether that’s through the fuzzed out reverberating guitars or the emotional and shimmering keyboards, Lustre is able to craft some of the most vivid atmospheres that have graced my ears. 'Wonder' carries on with their signature style, yet despite no alterations to their overall sound Lustre still prove to be masters of their craft when it comes to this particular form of keyboard laden black metal. The most notable aspect of Lustre is the heavy keyboard presence. They dominate the entire mix, pushing the guitars and vocals to the background. It’s a strange mixture, what with black metal being a predominantly guitar based genre of music, yet Lustre work wonders with this mixing. The guitars are suitably fuzzed out, and despite being quiet can be quite easily heard and provide a good background for the shimmering keyboards. The guitars function on a minimalistic, perhaps one could say droning wavelength, indeed there’s no solos, no real riffs, just one note chords stretched out for extended periods of time. The keyboards have always been the main instrument in Lustre’s arsenal, everything else comes second. "A Summer Night" makes great use of the keyboards; a Burzum meets Port-Royal kind of thing with hissed vocals, ambient keyboards and quiet guitars. The overall song structures of the songs are very simple, usually following the same formula of open with a keyboard melody, add some guitars, end with an atmospheric outro. With each songs being of an average of nine minutes with very little to differentiate between themselves, one could be led to believe that this is a boring album. With this kind of music though, one needs to approach it with the right mindset, if you go in thinking this is going to be too repetitive and way too boring then incidentally you’ll be bored out of your mind. This kind of music works best when the listener approaches it in a different way as to the way they’d approach an artist such as Iron Maiden. This isn't music for those looking for lots of riffs and solos; this is repetitive and trance inducing that above all aims to create an ethereal, even mystical atmosphere. Black metal has always been a genre than focuses on atmosphere much more than other metal genres yet Lustre takes this to the next possible extreme. The songs are incredibly minimalistic, containing only a small handful of melodies. The vocals show very little variation between pitch, dynamics and even rhythm, they’re a constant whispering shriek that could easily be missed if enough attention isn't placed upon them. Whilst the music of 'Wonder' is quite easy to listen to and admittedly quite accessible, this is not an album for everyone. The moods this album creates are unique, perhaps even abstract, there’s a strong sense of sorrow within this but the music also seems to deal with themes of hope and perhaps even wonder. Nachtzeit is the kind of abstract, surrealist artist who leaves his work open to interpretation, there’s no right or wrong way to feel about the music of Lustre and this is why this kind of music is so special. It has this undeniably ability to connect with people on a mass scale; due to the ambiguous nature of these songs they have a universal factor to them, as though Nachtzeit was able to channel the collective consciousness of the entire human race when forging this album. Pretentiousness aside, this truly is a great album, the keyboard melodies are stunning to say the least and the repetitive, droning guitars create a nice backdrop to the prominent keyboards. If you weren't swayed by Lustre’s brand of black metal in the past then this will not change your mind, Lustre keeps his style of music constant with the only differentiation present in the mood of the songs. Go into this album with the proper mindset and be sucked into Nachtzeit’s surrealist view of the world. (Sean Render)

Sorgsenhet - Drachennebel

Hail Sorgsenhet! (Alessio Skogen Algiz)

Toxic Holocaust - Chemistry of Consciousness

#FOR FANS OF: Death/Thrash
Over the last decade we have seen a resurgence of old school thrash. With numerous bands trying to capture the sound of 80's metal. The likes of Municipal Waste, Havok, and Skeletonwitch have cemented themselves firmly in the retro thrash movement. However, of the many bands within the trash revival scene, none have gained more recognition than Portland, Oregon's Toxic Holocaust. 'Chemistry of Consciousness' the fifth full length from these thrashers is no more inspired, creative or enjoyable than the previous four. It is, however, just as boring as all its predecessors. I am amazed at the popularity and enthusiasm that Toxic Holocaust has managed to gain. There is nothing here that remotely interests me. As I listen through the twenty-nine minutes of speed induced thrash with a blacked vocal style, by minute ten I am just waiting for it to be over. I must push on though, to see if there is even one stand out track on this album that I can talk about. Alas, it's not there and I am left feeling unimpressed and unfulfilled. To mention one track on the album, the best song on 'Chemistry of Consciousness' is the opening track "Awaken the Serpent", because at 1:39 it's the shortest. I have not found much interest at all in this retro thrash movement, and aside from sci-fi progressive thrashers Vektor, I can't name one band worth my time. Even with that being said the most popular of these acts is also my least favorite. After five full length albums (five to many, I might add) I believe it's time for Toxic Holocaust to throw in the towel. The only positive that I can present to you here, is that I respect the energy and enthusiasm that Joel Grind has put into this project and the production is pretty good too. But all the energy and production in the world can't make up for poorly crafted songs. Unless you are a true revivalist, I recommend keeping your wallet in your pocket and moving on. (Brian Grebenz)

Putrefact - Of Those Who Were Deceased

#FOR FANS OF: Death metal old-school, Grave, Dismember, Unleashed, Morbid Angel
This two-track EP from Mexico’s Putrefact is a shining example of old-school death metal that has a lot of elements at work in the different underground sections of the genre. There’s elements of cavernous-sounding primitive Death, Swedish styled influences and even sections replete with doom influences though those are on the backburner, and normally, these are simple, primitive tracks all slung through those Swedish sounding riffs at various tempos, from straight-forward chugging to thrashing death metal or slow-paced doom offerings that keep the Swedish guitars rattling along nicely as it burns through its paces. You really can’t tell much about a band with such a small window of critique, though it definitely seems apparent the band is hungry, energetic and definitely willing to play around with the clichés, as the opener "We Were Deceased", tends to roll through far more up-beat tempos and thrashes more often than not, meshing really nicely with the simply massive, cavernous vocals that really give an aura of dirty, mucky howls corresponding to the guttural tone of the guitars. Second song, "II" is slightly more doom-oriented as it’s a little slower, contains far more spacious patterns and kicks up the energy rarely, which isn’t a shocker since more than half of it is taken up with an ambient noise outro. It’s hard to see where they’re going, but this definitely seems like a fine band to watch in the scene if they can give us a little more to handle on future releases. (Don Anelli)

Euglena – Близость

Dawn of Tears - Act III: The Dying Eve

#PER CHI AMA: Swedish Death, Dark Tranquillity, Children of Bodom
(Francesco Scarci)

Sutekh Hexen - Monument of Decay

Autumnblaze - Every Sun is Fragile

#FOR FANS OF: Gothic atmospheric rock/metal, Katatonia, Alcest, AnathemA
Autumnblaze formed in Saarland, Germany back in 1996, after releasing a demo in 1997 and an EP in 1998 they release their first long player 'DammerElbenTragodie' in 1999. Somehow this band has flown under my radar for fifteen plus years. When asked if I would like to review the album, I accepted the challenge with open arms and an open mind. However, because of my ignorance to their previous works, I will not be able to talk about how they have or have not progressed as band. But, this is a review of their current release, so that's exactly what I will do. 'Every Sun is Fragile' is the sixth full length release from Autumnblaze. The style of music played here is "gothic, atmospheric rock/metal". The bands that come to mind when trying to describe their sound would be Katatonia, Anathema, and Alcest. Autumnblaze walk the line between rock and metal, jumping back and forth with varying amounts of success. There are some clunkers on this album, but they do succeed at creating some memorable songs as well. After a nice little instrumental intro, the first proper song on the album, "New Ghosts in Town", has a 'Viva Emptiness' era Katatonia vibe to it. It maintains this vibe throughout most of the songs seven plus minutes, however the last minute of the song builds into a Alcest-esc finish. This is a good song and it peaked my interest and excitement of the band it took me all this time to hear. "Im Spiegel" draws the listener in with it's punchy riff that has very jumpy feel to it. Probably being the most metal song, with hits heavy distorted guitars and harsh vocals, shows how these guys jump from rock to metal with relative ease. This track is followed by the balladish "Mein Engel, Der Aus Augen FileBt". This song shows the band doing what it does best. I believe they feel at home and most comfortable playing the softer rock style tunes. This is very apparent on "How I Learned to Burn My Teardrops". This is my favorite song on the album. An absolutely beautiful song that leaves the listener somewhere between tears of sorrow and joy. Another definite winner on the album is "A Place for Paper Diamonds". This song has all the feel and beauty of the previous song mentioned with a little of their heavier moments sprinkled in. This works perfectly here, where it seems to fail elsewhere on the album. 'Every Sun is Fragile' is a good album with hints of greatness. I feel that at fifty-four minutes it's a little too long. There is some filler here. I would like to see Autumnblaze craft more songs like "How I Learned to Burn My Teardrops" moving forward. Even though there are some clunkers here, there are enough good moments that make this a worthwhile purchase. (Brian Grebenz)

Station Dysthymia – Overhead, Without Any Fuss, the Stars Where Going Out

Gran bel lavoro! (Bob Stoner)

Engines of Vengeance - Lions & Rockets

Bel prodotto, ascoltateli e poi fate come vi pare. Io li terrò in rotazione in auto almeno per qualche giorno ancora.(Michele Montanari)

Consecration - Univerzum Zna

We’re Here Because We’re Here’. Sorprendenti! (Francesco Scarci)
